We always were. America has some great people. Responsible, intelligent, ethically gifted citizens, the best of us, appeared representative. They never were, but when they led the country it worked.
The barbarian elements, concentrated in the south, were bonded by a shared bigotry and a revivalist, irrationalist, charismatic religion that legitimized authoritarianism, apartheid and brutality.
