Rugged individualism was always a canard, innocent in its place. Vanity is everywhere, in a manner or degree. At the extremes it achieves escape velocity into unreality with the most dependent, subsidized and supported class claiming supreme independence, branding themselves 'makers,' and riding off into a mirage and hallucinated sunset of productivity and personal achievement.
